The world has certainly changed and every day we are seeing something different: where we can go and not go, what we can do and not do. The news tells us every day about how many more people are sick, alongside those who need treatment and are not able to get it. Don't we need some reliability, strength and courage to follow someone who is true and knows what it going on? Here is a story from 2000 years ago which is as true today as it was then. REBUILDING OUR LIVES ON A STRONG FOUNDATION
Story of 2 housebuilders – Matthew 7 verses 24-27
Jesus taught about 2 builders. The 1st planned carefully and built his house on a rock, which was hard work and took him a while! It had secure, solid foundations made of stone, high up and he knew it would keep him and his family safe. When the wind and rains came, they stayed warm and dry inside.
The 2nd builder took the easy, quick route and built his on the sand so that he and his family could quickly take shelter. When the rain and winds came the sand around the house was all washed away – its foundations were quickly gone, the house and lives destroyed.
House No 1 stayed firm and secure, standing the
of test of time long after it was built.
Jesus goes on to say that a life based on him is like
the house built on the rock – there is security,
reliability, hope, with the ability to stand the tests
of the storms of life as we know it. When we have
these things we can feel more kindness, reaching out
to others, sharing the good things we have been blessed
with ourselves.
A life based on sand like House No 2 is like
a life built on and relying on temporary pleasures -
status, money, popularity which can all disappear in a flash.
Without a firm foundation, without rules, without caring and
kindness, society falls down. There’s anarchy,
demonstrations, riots, some of the mad and bad
behaviours seen recently around the globe
and on our doorsteps.
The good news is Jesus wants to pull you to the rock, to give you a firm foundation. He himself is that unshakeable Rock, who promises us goodness, mercy, faithfulness, to be with us every step of the way to be with us in our current circumstances giving us hope for something not only different but better and sustainable because he is God and he is in control.
He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. Psalm 40:2s destroyed.
